With so many similarly-named Spanish lottery games floating about, wading through the game options and selecting your choice could be quite tricky at the best of times. TheSpanish El Gordo de la Primitiva (not to be confused with the “La Primitiva” lottery, nor the “El Gordo de Navidad” Christmas raffle) is a Spanish national lottery draw which takes place once a week, every Sunday.
The El Gordo was established in 1993 by the Spanish lotto organizers, Loterías y Apuestas del Estado – which, coincidentally, was established by Royal Decree in 1985. It was a game that was initially drawn once a month, but thanks to the popularity amongst the locals the draw frequency was increased to once a week – this new revision was brought into action in October 1997.
The only other revision introduced to the game, has been the addition of a 9th prize tier in the game, which was added in 2005 in order to create more winners during every Sunday draw. The game structure of the El Gordo de la Primitiva is quite similar to a few other big-league international lotto games, such as the US Powerball and US Mega Millions games. The draw takes place using two separate numbered ball sets and draw machines.
In order to participate in the game, you as the player are required to make your first selection of five numbers from a range of a possible 54 – these are known as the primary numbers. Your second selection would be that of the bonus ball, or key number – this would be one number from a range of a possible nine. In order to claim the jackpot prize, your lucky lotto numbers need to correctly match all five primary numbers and key number which get drawn by the game. The El Gordo has a starting jackpot prize of €5,000,000 (five million Euros) and has a no-limit rollover cap in place – meaning it has the potential to roll over until the jackpot prize is won.
The biggest recorded El Gordo jackpot win to date has been €33,000,000 (thirty-three million Euros), won during the course of 2011. There is, however, a 20% government-imposed tax on any winnings over €2,500 – so if you happen to score a big win, then be prepared to part ways with a portion of your well-earned winnings. The game gets drawn every Sunday – but please note that no ticket sales are made on the day of the draw (this applies to online entries as well) – so ensure that your El Gordo numbers are played at least a day before the draw!
The draw itself takes place in Madrid at 21h30 CET, and the El Gordo de la Primitiva results will be made available on PlayUKinternet.com’s latest lotto results page.
